N.H.C.C. History
The Pastors, Chuck & Polly Russell, came to Newport in 1975 from Joplin, Mo. with a vision to minister to those in need and to make a difference in the inner city. They purchased Bambach's grocery store on the corner of 10th and Central Avenues and converted it into a Drop-in Counseling and Youth Center with a Coffee House Ministry on the weekends. "Kids' Korner" Day Care opened in 1985 to give single parents and low income families a loving place for their children to learn and play. The next building, 943 Central Avenue, was purchased in 1988, and it became the first home of New Hope Christian Center. Hundreds of lives have been changed and families reunited since that time. The original church building is now New Hope Youth Center and New Hope Christian Center, 941 Central Avenue, is the church home for an awesome group of caring, devoted Christians who love Jesus and who are working together to make the Pastor's dream, a spiritual hospital with healing everywhere you hurt, a reality. The Russell family, Pastor Chuck and Polly, their children (Aric & Becky, Mark and Shelly, Mike and Heather) and grandchildren are still actively engaged in ministering together in the Newport Public Schools and the community as well.
